Chapter Twelve

It was only a short walk to the local coffee and breakfast shop—the same one that delivered Mitch’s coffee throughout the day. Mitch was particular fond of the store because he’d worked there for about a year when he was just starting out. The owner, Leon, had been good to Mitch, and when he’d been scoping out a place to set up his business he’d been thrilled to discover somewhere close to his old stomping ground.

Leon didn’t work the morning shift so Mitch didn’t have a chance to catch up with his old friend. He gave his order to one of the waitresses instead and steered Sam over to a booth at the back of the building.

She hadn’t said much on the walk over. Her arms were crossed across her body again, and a slight flush still stained her cheeks. Mitch understood her reaction. She was embarrassed that she was short of cash, probably at the necessity of having to find another job. But had she known him better there would have been no need for that. Mitch had been perilously close to the poverty line at many points in his life, and at those same points various people had been around to help him out. He said as much to Sam as they took their seats.

“There’s no need for you to be embarrassed,” he told her. “We’ve all—myself and Franny included—struggled. There’s no shame in admitting to it.”

“I’m not embarrassed,” she said. “Just…” She frowned. “It is what it is.”

“And what is it?” Mitch asked. “Will you tell me?”

She picked up the jug of water from the centre of the table and poured them both a glass. A slice of lime fell into hers, and Mitch watched as she scooped it out and placed it on the little plate off to her left side. She was stalling for time, but Mitch let her, his innate need to demand answers subdued by the flush on the woman sat across from him. “My landlord has increased my rent,” she finally said.

“By how much?”

She shrugged. “A hundred dollars a week.”

“And how much do you already pay?”

“One fifty.”

“Is it worth the extra money?” Mitch asked.

“No,” she said. “It’s not even close to being worth the money. It’s—” She halted as the waitress came over with their drinks, and Mitch watched as the woman who seemed happy to go waitress somewhere herself, helped to move the coffees on to the table and smile her thanks to their waitress. “Here.” She passed Mitch his espresso then began to stir some sugar into her own latte.

“So move somewhere else,” Mitch said the moment she was finished.

Sam took a sip of her drink and eyed him over the rim of the mug. When she spoke it was in that same whispery, embarrassed sort of voice. “I can’t afford a big security deposit.”

“Ah, I see.” He nodded. “Does your landlord know this?”

She took another sip. “I guess he must suspect. If I had enough to move I would have moved already.
